Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Update 13 March 2020

The Institute continues to take the COVID-19 risk very seriously. Our highest priority remains the health of our members, volunteers and the HQ Team. The Council and Executive Team discussed the situation at length at the Council meeting on Wednesday 11 March.  We recognise this situation is evolving fast and requires agile responses as the situation unfolds. 

In light of the World Health Organisation declaring COVID-19 as a pandemic, and recent developments globally and in Australia, here is the latest update on the precautions we are taking.

Upcoming Insights sessions at the Actuaries Institute
The Insights session scheduled for 17 March in Sydney and Melbourne Actuaries and Anti-Discrimination has been postponed - future date to be confirmed.

At this stage we are reviewing our inhouse events schedule, check the Events Calendar for up-to-date information.

20/20 All-Actuaries Summit
As you know, many public events are now being cancelled in Australia. Many companies are implementing their business continuity plans which restrict participation in large gatherings and domestic travel unless it is business critical. The health of our delegates, presenters, members and the HQ Team is our priority, accordingly we have made the decision to cancel the All-Actuaries Summit which was scheduled to be held from 3–5 June on the Gold Coast.

We are looking into alternative options to deliver the same content remotely or postpone to a later date. Further information will be provided as soon as possible.

We will be refunding all registration fees. Our Events Team will contact Members who have registered to process their refund. Regarding your own travel and accommodation expenses, our advice is that you contact the airline and hotel as soon as possible to request a refund.

In the meantime, we thank all our volunteers who have been involved and encourage you to continue to prepare your papers and/or presentations, these are important thought leadership contributions to our profession and, as indicated above, we are looking at alternative dates as well as a virtual format for the Summit. As a professional member organisation, we did not make this decision lightly, and are very disappointed that it has been necessary to take this step.

The April exams are approaching. We are pleased to say that at this stage, all venues are expected to be available. We are in regular contact with the venues to ensure compliance with the latest safety and hygiene requirements. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and advise on any updates as necessary.  In recognition of the current circumstances, with some countries experiencing high levels of confirmed cases of coronavirus, members can seek special consideration if they decide to withdraw. Committee Meetings
Our volunteers are vital to the success and sustainability of the Actuaries Institute and our profession. As an added precaution and to minimise risk to our volunteers, we now request that you hold virtual meetings until further advice is issued.  Please email our Receptionist Linda McMaster to set up your phone and video conference. Cindy Moloney, HQ Project Support and Customer Experience Officer, can assist you with any trouble shooting for phone and video conferencing. Please don’t hesitate to contact Cindy via email, she will be happy to help if you have a technical problem.

We have put all international and domestic business-related travel by the HQ Team and volunteers on hold for the moment and will review the situation on an ongoing basis.

Professional contribution
We recognise the profession can contribute to society through our expertise and knowledge at this difficult time, through our understanding of morbidity and mortality issues, impact on investments, insurance or super, risk management or data analytics. We have published a number of articles on Actuaries Digital and are setting up a Pandemics Resource Centre that will link to all past papers or publications on this issue.  If you are doing work in this area or have an interest in getting involved, please let us know via

Services Continuity
This global pandemic is fast-evolving.  We are preparing for a range of scenarios to support member services and, at the same time protect our HQ Team, volunteers and members.  The Actuaries Institute office is closed until further notice.  We have tested our business continuity plan and all HQ Team members are working remotely, to ensure continuity of service for members.
