Severe Weather in a Changing Climate: Implication for Built environment
Wednesday 16 June 2021, 12:00 - 1:15pm AEST

Presented by Mark Leplastrier
CPD Points: 2

In 2020, IAG released the second edition of the Severe Weather in a Changing Climate report, in partnership with the US-based National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). That report notes that climate change will result in more frequent and intense extreme weather events across Australia, resulting in greater property, personal and economic damage, and hardship for Australian communities.

As co-author of the report, Mark will provide a summary of key findings and more recent developments in IAG's modelling of natural hazard risk, including observations from the recent Tropical Cyclone Seroja which made landfall in Western Australia. This leads into a discussion of whether current models accurately measure today's climate risk and considerations for modelling scenarios for future climate risk. He will provide a broad overview of his learnings about how to work with decision makers in the built environment, the implications of climate risk for land use planning and building codes, and then draw together some proposals for the role of insurers and banks in these discussions.

In context of pending APRA requirements for climate change disclosures, this session will be particularly interesting and relevant for both actuaries who model climate risks and finance managers who are involved in business strategy and risk management for banks, insurers, asset owners and other financial institutions.
