Aamer Fattah Aamer Fattah

A seasoned insurance executive and innovation leader, Aamer’s areas of expertise include actuarial pricing research and product development, design thinking, digital strategy and transformation, medico-scientific consulting, artificial intelligence and strategic foresight.

Originally qualified as a medical scientist, Aamer is a Deep Tech expert with 17 years of experience in applied research and development in the insurance industry. He holds two medical science degrees from the University of Otago, a graduate business degree from the University of New South Wales, and is a graduate of the University of Oxford’s Fintech Programme.

In his free time, Aamer enjoys researching and writing about emerging technology trends, practising mixed martial arts, exploring B-roads on his motorbike, and levelling-up his machine learning skills.

Adam Butt BW Adam Butt

Adam Butt is an Associate Professor, and has been in the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics since 2005. He completed his PhD at ANU in 2011 and has had his research published in a number of top-ranked actuarial journals.

Adam Reid Adam Reid

Adam is the General Manager of AIA Australia’s Vitality program and has 15 years’ experience in financial services.  After qualifying as an actuary in Australia in 2004, Adam spent the majority of his career overseas including 5 years in London with PruHealth (now VitalityHealth) and 3 years in Johannesburg with Discovery (the largest South African health insurer).   Adam joined AIA 18 months ago and is responsible for the performance of Australia’s Vitality program, ensuring that Vitality is able to achieve the objectives of AIA’s underlying insurance businesses and help AIA customers to lead healthier, longer, better lives.

Aidan's professional passion is to align and improve the financial wellbeing for all. He currently works at the Financial Services Council where his role is to support and advocate for better life insurance public policy. Prior to this, he spent four years at EY as a consultant to the Life Insurance and Wealth Management industries.

Alan Greenfield is a principal and co-founder of Taylor Fry. Alan’s career has spanned traditional actuarial work for insurers and accident compensation schemes, to more recently working with corporate and government clients to making the most of their data. In 2015, he was awarded Actuary of the Year by the Actuaries Institute for his contribution in developing the investment approach to public policy making. Before founding Taylor Fry, Alan was a consultant at Tillinghast Towers Perrin and Coopers & Lybrand, working in Sydney, London, Chicago and New York.

  Andries Terblanche

Andries Terblanché has over 35 years of experience in the Financial Services industry and is currently the Global Lead of Dynamic Risk Assessment, which he spent 12 years developing and is now scaling for implementation across KPMG’s network of member firms globally. He mainly advises on systemic risk to clients across industries and around the world.

In 2016 Andries was appointed a Senior Research Fellow to the Institute of Global Finance (IGF) in recognition of his research on systemic risk, becoming the only private practitioner to hold this position. The IGF is the leading global academic institution on systemic risk and the subject of interconnectedness.

Until his relocation to London in 2016 he was an Adjunct Professor of Risk and Actuarial Studies at the University of New South Wales in Australia, and a guest lecturer at the University of Technology in Sydney.

Andries holds a Master of Commerce from University of Johannesburg, a Master of Commerce from HK University of Science and Technology/NYU Stern, a Master of Science in Risk Management from NYU Stern and a Doctorate of Commerce in Accounting Sciences from University of Pretoria.

  Ajay Parshotam

Ajay is a Manager at Deloitte Actuaries and Consultants with over nine years consulting experience, working primarily in the Life Insurance Sector.

He qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) in 2012 and transferred to a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia in 2018

While at Deloitte he managed use cases to highlight new exponential technologies, and how these will disrupt the future of work for actuaries

Alan Merten

Alan joined Deloitte early in 2016 as a Partner in the Actuaries & Consultants group in Sydney. He has over 30 years’ experience in CEO, functional leadership and consulting roles in Australia, Asia and Europe across the insurance and wealth management secctors. 

In consulting, he leads multi-disciplinary teams to advise senior executives in financial services organisations on improving the performance of their businesses. 

Alexander Aeberli BW Alex Aeberli

Alex is an Actuarial Senior Manager in EY Australia’s Actuarial & Insurance Advisory Services team. He has been working on IFRS 17 related topics for the past six years and he has contributed to EY’s various responses to the IASB on previous Exposure Drafts on IFRS 17. He is currently working with several Life insurers, General insurers, and Reinsurers in Oceania on a wide range of topics related to IFRS 17 including addressing data, systems, and process questions.

Prior to moving to Australia, Alex has worked with clients on IFRS 17 topics in Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, India, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He was supporting EY’s Korea practice on the first ever IFRS 17 implementation project in Seoul during 2016. Alex is a member EY’s Oceania IFRS 17 Steering Committee, a member of EY’s APAC IFRS 17 Steering Committee, and a member of EY’s Global IFRS Insurance Technical Panel. He is the functional owner of EY’s Global IFRS 17 technical & operational implementation network. Alex is a qualified actuary with the Swiss Actuarial Association and has over 7 years’ of international work experience.

Alex is a retired actuary. During his career he was variously Chief Actuary for the ANZ life companies, Chief Actuary for the CBA life companies and consulted to many of the large and medium financial organisations in Australia, and in Asia. He has co-authored a number of papers to the Actuaries Institute, including the 2006 paper "PANDEMIC - what every Actuary advising an Australian Financial Services Organisation should know", served on the, then, Life Insurance Practice Committee and he convened the team presenting the Life Insurance Course for a number of years.

Alison is the Head of P&C Structured Solutions Asia for Swiss Re Group's Reinsurance division and is based in Sydney.. Her areas of expertise include optimisation of reinsurance programs,, actuarial reserving & pricing, Mergers & Acquisition, the interaction of capital requirements and reinsurance and tailoring reinsurance solutions for multi-national insurers.  She is a long-serving member of the Actuaries Institute Climate Change Working Group.

Alison is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute of Australia, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Charterholder of the CFA Institute.

Amanda Aitken BW Amanda Aitken

Amanda is a member of the Institute’s Actuarial Education team. She brings her passion for teaching and years of actuarial experience to this role, which is focused on redeveloping the Actuary and Fellowship subjects, including the new 'Data Analytics Principles' and 'Data Analytics Applications' subjects. Andrew is an experienced financial services professional who specialises in providing actuarial and strategic consulting advice to leading companies and superannuation funds. 

During his career, Andrew has driven research and public policy in various areas of interest, including retirement adequacy, retirement income products and solutions, member disclosure and advice, member engagement and digital solutions, governance and risk management.

Andrew has been a regular speaker at industry events such as the annual ASFA conference and the Conexus Post-Retirement Conference. In addition, he was a speaker at the 2012 and 2015 Asia-Pacific Pensions Forum and the 2010 OECD/IOPS Global Forum on Private Pensions.

Andrew is currently a member of the Institute's Public Policy Council Committee (since May 2019) and was previously Chair of the Retirement Strategy Group (2017-19), Convenor of the Superannuation Practice Committee (2008-17) and a Member of Council (2012).

Anthony Asher BW Anthony Asher

Anthony Asher is an actuary and Associate Professor at UNSW, currently teaching the Control Cycle and ERM courses. His working life has been divided between universities, APRA and more conventional life insurance and consulting roles. He has been active in professional committees, and is currently convenor of the Actuaries Institute Retirement Income Working Group. He is relatively well known in the profession for his interest in ethics in professional life, particularly the social and governance impacts of actuarial work. This paper combines annuities, ethics and governance.

Anton works at Challenger as CFO Life and Appointed Actuary. He was previously Chief Actuary at AMP and before that spent 20 years as a consultant with Tillinghast and its successors, working across the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe.

Anton’s areas of expertise include: risk and capital management; economic valuations; asset-liability management; distribution profitability; and product design and pricing.

He is convenor of the LIWMPC.

Ashish is a qualified Actuary and a Principal at Finity Consulting. Ashish is the Appointed Actuary for a number of general insurers in Australia and New Zealand. His career has spanned both traditional areas of actuarial advice, as well as developing innovative analytics solutions for his clients. Ashish is very passionate about keeping the actuarial profession moving forward by embracing new tools and ways of working, and expanding the profession’s sphere of influence.

Bloreen Abbasi  Bloreen Abbasi

Bloreen is currently working as a Senior Analyst at Westpac. She has worked in the life insurance industry and gratuity/pension consulting in Pakistan prior to coming to Australia. Bloreen joined National Australia Bank in 2017 after arriving to Australia, where she worked as a Data Analyst in Portfolio Management for commercial real estate for about 2 years and then moved back to superannuation consulting in MLC Wealth.

Bloreen has an Honours of Actuarial Science degree from University of Waterloo and currently pursuing actuarial exams via Society of Actuaries USA.

Brendan Counsell BW Brendan Counsell

Brendan is a partner in EY’s actuarial practice based in Sydney. He has over 20 years’ experience in the life insurance and wealth management markets in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Asia Pacific region. He advises insurance clients on a wide range of actuarial and business issues including capital strategy, product and pricing and financial and management reporting. He is EY’s IFRS 17 leader for Oceania and is actively involved in the interpretation and application of the new insurance contracts accounting standard through a number of professional and industry roles.

 Caroline Stevenson Caroline Stevenson

Caroline has been working as the Chief Actuary with strong focus on pricing and data analytics at QBE Insurance since January 2019.   She is working with her wider team of pricing and actuarial professionals (including the Appointed Actuary who is in her team) to increase proactive, strategic partnering with the business, foster collaboration and cross-skilling across different functional areas within QBE. 

Prior to working at QBE, Caroline spent 13 years at Quantium, developing from technical lead on projects to leading the insurance practice and executive roles in both insurance and banking.  Caroline worked on a wide range of analytical projects, primarily in the general insurance and banking space.  This included the development of market leading capabilities that draw on advanced, customer level modelling and projections in the areas of pricing, credit risk assessment, customer analytics, marketing and data driven strategy. During this time Caroline also opened Quantium’s Melbourne office, which ultimately led to her being recognised as a finalist in the Telstra Victorian Business Women’s Awards.

Early in her career Caroline held other roles at QBE, Goldman Sachs in Germany and Trowbridge Deloitte working across pricing, capital modelling and reserving.  Caroline qualified as a Fellow in 2004, winning both the Prescott Prize for Overall Performance and the Katherine Robertson Prize for General insurance in her final year of studies.

Catherine leads many of PwC’s superannuation/pension retirement policy initiatives, including the current member outcomes reforms which will result in widespread rationalisation of superannuation funds in Australia. Previously, Catherine has led other initiatives on superannuation, Ageing Australia and the impact of the ageing population on products, services and workforce

For many large superannuation funds, Catherine has advised on strategy and due diligence for mergers and outsourcing arrangements over the past 5-10 years

In addition to which Catherine holds a number of board and advisory positions across the financial services sector.

Cecilia is a manager at PwC and has an actuarial and computer science background with ten years of experience in the retirement benefits industry. Cecilia has worked across actuarial consulting, digital tools development and commercial management.

Chao Qiao is a consultant with PwC who provides consultancy services in general insurance pricing, reserving, capital, reinsurance and assurance reviews. Chao also works across broader fields within the financial services industry, including regulatory reviews, strategy advice, process transformations, finance, IFRS17 and risk management. Chao actively participates in research, conferences and Institute activities. Chao was recently a member of Council from 2015 to 2018 and currently serves as the Chief Examiner of C3B.

Chris Dolman is currently Director, Data and Algorithmic Ethics at IAG, helping to ensure that modern decision making algorithms and other advanced uses of data are designed and implemented in an ethical, responsible and thoughtful way. Prior to this, Chris has held a variety of senior management positions in industry and consulting, in Australia and the UK.

Christa is a senior partner in PwC’s actuarial consulting practice, with around 30 years’ experience in the general insurance, injury compensation and social welfare sectors - helping clients solve strategic, risk management and operational challenges with data and evidence. Her varied roles have included being the Appointed Actuary for a major general insurer, leading the actuarial practice at PwC for a number of years, and providing strategic and policy advice to government. A recent career highlight was leading PwC’s work to support the Australian Priority Investment Approach to Welfare, which is a significant Commonwealth government initiative that aims to use the best available evidence to ensure vulnerable Australians have a better future. Christa is passionate about helping the financial services, government and not for profit sectors work together to address economic and social issues.

Colette Reid has been Appointed Actuary at Pacific Life Re (Australia) since 2017. Colette has 30 years’ experience working in life and general insurance and reinsurance in Australia and Europe across pricing, reporting, portfolio management and reinsurance management. More recently Colette has focussed on capital and reinsurance optimisation, and was the chair of the Actuaries Institute working group preparing a response to APRA’s review of LPS 117.

Craig is a Principal and consulting actuary within Milliman’s Australian practice, where he leads Milliman’s financial modelling and objectives based advice analytic work. Craig also takes an active lead in many of Milliman’s local life insurance consulting projects. Craig has 18 years’ actuarial experience in the life insurance and wealth management industries and has been involved in a wide variety of projects in Australia, the UK, the US and Europe.

Damian is the Principal of Aurum Group Consulting. He qualified as an Actuary (FIAA) in 1999 and has over 20-years of experience working as an Actuary.  

Aurum Consulting specialise in assisting clients with product development and also provide our clients with resourcing support to meet business deliverables in a timely and cost-effective manner.  

Damian has been the Head of Pricing (Group Insurance) for several life insurers and has a deep experience of life insurance product and pricing within the group insurance segment.

Danny has over 24 years’ experience across both life and general insurance, including 15 years in reinsurance. He is a Life Actuary, having worked in the London, US, Japanese and Australian and New Zealand markets across pricing, product development, client management, capital management and structuring solutions. Danny joined Aon in 2019 as Head of Life Reinsurance for Australia and New Zealand, based in Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute.

Danny Shuttleworth BW Danny Shuttleworth

Danny joined AIA as Chief Actuary in March 2013 and has more recently also added the Chief Strategy Officer responsibilities. He has over 30 years’ experience in the Australian finance and insurance industry in a wide range of roles in both the Corporate & Consulting sectors. Prior to joining AIA, Danny was the Deputy Group Actuary and Appointed Actuary NMLA at AXA APH/ AMP. Danny has also held Appointed Actuary roles with Norwich Union Life and Australian Eagle Insurance. He has also worked at MLC/National Australia Bank, PwC and Tillinghast Towers Perrin. David Carruthers BW David Carruthers

David joined Frontier in 2015 as a Senior Consultant and leads the Members Solutions Group. He provides investment advice to a range of clients and conducts research in the area of retirement strategy and product development for superannuation funds. Prior to Frontier David spent nineteen years at Mercer in both the UK and Australia. Prior to joining Mercer, David was at Towers Perrin for around six years, working with a number of clients in a consulting and research capacity. David holds a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

David Gifford has more than twenty years’ experience in the accident compensation industry, including ten years as an actuarial consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and ten years in various roles at the Transport Accident Commission. At the Transport Accident Commission his roles included Executive Manager of Business Intelligence, where he was responsible for all reporting and analytics within the organisation, and Chief Strategy Officer.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, Master of Business Administration from Melbourne Business School and Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

  Dr David Knox BA PhD FIAA

David is a Senior Partner at Mercer and Senior Actuary for Australia.  He is the National Leader for Research; actuary to the Tasmanian and Western Australian public sector superannuation plans; and lead author of the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index.

Before joining Mercer, David was at PricewaterhouseCoopers and prior to that was the Foundation Professor of Actuarial Studies at The University of Melbourne. In his two decades in academia, he acted as a consultant to a range of financial organisations, in both the private and public sectors, specialising in superannuation and retirement incomes. He has spoken and written widely in this area and has served on many Government and industry committees.

David was an independent Board member of Australian Prudential Regulation Authority from 1998 to 2003 and President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia in 2000.

David has been a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute for 22 years and has worked in the Life Insurance Industry for the majority of that time.  5 years ago David switched to the Academic Sector and has taught and researched in Mathematics and Actuarial Science.

DavidMillar  David Millar

David is a Director in EY’s Actuarial Services practice and has been advising the life insurance, superannuation and wealth management industries. He has close to 15 years of experience in building, validating and investigating financial models that underpin the provision of strategic advice to boards and senior management. David provides a wide range of both transformation and remediation assistance to his financial services clients. As part of his role on the LIWMPC, Dave is the sponsor of the Customer Outcome Workings Group, from which this presentation has originated.

Diane Somerville BW Diane Somerville

Diane is a Principal in Deloitte, with over 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, specialising in superannuation and other employee benefits. During her career she has provided actuarial, consulting and strategic advice to many of Australia’s largest employers and superannuation plan trustees across all aspects of the superannuation value chain. Diane is a lead author of Deloitte’s regular Dynamics of the Australian Superannuation System publication. She has a keen interest in how our superannuation system can support, and ideally improve, the retirement outcomes and financial security of all Australians in an environment of investment volatility and uncertain longevity. Diane is a member of the Institute’s Superannuation Practice Committee and the Accounting Sub-Committee of the SPC.

Dimitri Semenovich  Dimitri Semenovich

Dimitri is a Director of Analytics at IAG. He has a particular interest in the advancement of practical actuarial methodology and its realignment with modern advances in optimisation and machine learning. His other interests are in market design and risk theory. Dimitri has a PhD in Computer Science. 

Donald Freudenstein  Donald Freudenstein

Don is a lead analyst at Quantium with over 7 years’ experience leading analytical teams and projects across private and public sectors. Don has deep expertise in using Quanitum’s proprietary banking transaction data in innovative settings to develop rich demographic and behavioural profiles, size markets and understand drivers of performance.

Don is a qualified actuary and a Director in Deloitte's Actuaries & Consultants practice. He has over 25 years of experience in financial services in Australia, USA and UK with an emphasis on general insurance. He has worked in personal and commercial lines general insurance, reinsurance, life insurance and banking and has been responsible for pricing, valuations, capital modelling, mergers & acquisition support as well as internal and external audits and peer reviews. He also has experience in financial services conduct risk and remediation relating to inappropriate advice and mis-selling.

Duncan Rawlinson  Duncan Rawlinson

Duncan is a Senior Vice President of RGA Australia and a member of RGA’s Global Financial Solutions team. His current role includes responsibility for spearheading RGA’s reinsurance support for longevity and lifetime income stream client solutions in the Australian and NZ markets. From 2012 to 2018, Duncan was CFO and Chief Actuary of RGA’s operations in Australia and NZ.

Prior to joining RGA, Duncan was a Principal and consultant at Towers Watson, and formerly Towers Perrin, working in its insurance and financial services (aka Tillinghast) consulting business

Estelle Liu BW Estelle Liu

Estelle is a consultant at Rice Warner. Her areas of focus were on retirement solutions and investment strategies. She has previously worked on retirement solutions design including longevity solutions and lifecycle investment strategies. She is also one of the lead authors that developed the Members’ Default Utility Function (MDUF). It is an open-architecture metric to assist the industry to design retirement outcome solutions which subsequently won two industry awards. Estelle has qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) and Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA).

Estelle studied at the University of New South Wales where she obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a first-class Honours in Actuarial Studies. Her thesis which focuses on Immunization and Hedging of Post Retirement Income Annuity Products was published on the Risks Journal in March 2017. Estelle is currently the convenor of the Actuaries Institute’s Superannuation Projection and Disclosure Sub-committee. She has been actively involved in public policy submissions including those for Treasury, DSS and APRA and industry research in the related areas.

Flavio Menezes is a Professor of Economics at The University of Queensland. He is an elected member of UQ’s Academic Board and of its Standing Committee. He is the past President of the Economic Society of Australia (Queensland), the Chair of the ERA 2018 economics and commerce research evaluation committee, a member of editorial boards and associate editor of a number of international journals, and a co-editor of the Economic Record. He has published over 75 journal articles on the economics of auctions, competition and regulatory economics, industrial organisation and market design.

Professor Menezes is the Chair of the Queensland Competition Authority, and a member of the Federal Government's Deregulation Taskforce Advisory Board. He has extensive consulting experience. His experience in Australia includes advising the Federal Government, AEMC, ACCC, IPART, QCA, the Federal, ACT and Victorian Governments on market design issues in regulatory environments. It also includes providing economic advice to various private and public organisations on mergers, competition and regulatory issues in defence, fisheries, gambling, energy, banking, health, transport, water and telecommunications.

 Francis Beens Francis Beens

Francis Beens is an actuary with Finity Consulting, and has spent fourteen years consulting to general insurers and accident compensation schemes on actuarial valuations, financial projections, and capital. He is currently a member of the Actuaries Institute AASB 17 Implementation Taskforce, and the IFRS17 Professional Guidance Working Group, and the liaison between AASB 17 groups and GIPC.

Gaurav teaches Actuarial Studies in the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics. Prior to joining the ANU, Gaurav was at Bond University where he was instrumental in achieving accreditation for their actuarial program. Gaurav's research interests span the fields of Life Insurance and Superannuation. His main area of research is the analysis of life-cycle decision-making process through numerical stochastic dynamic programming.

Geoff has worked in both the Commercial Sector and Academia for the past 35 years with the majority of that time spent in Academia researching in areas of Finance, Computer Science and Computer Simulation.  Currently he is also researching in the area of Deep Learning

Geoff Warren BW Geoff Warren

Associate Professor Geoff Warren is Fund Convenor of the ANU Student Managed Fund. He is also an active researcher who focuses on investment-related areas with an applied emphasis, including: funds management, superannuation, portfolio construction, long-term investing, and the evaluation and taxation of investments.

Prior to pursuing an academic career, Geoff spent over 20 years in investment markets, including as the Director of Capital Markets Research at Russell Investments; as an analyst, Chief Strategist and Head of Research with investment bank Ord Minnett / JP Morgan Australia; and as an equity portfolio manager at AMP Capital. He also currently sits on the Salvation Army Investment Advisory Board, the Brandes Institute Asia-Pacific Advisory Board, and the Atlas Infrastructure Macro Advisory Board. Geoff has a PhD from the AGSM, and a BComm (Hons) with the University Medal from UNSW.

Gerard is a Director in the Life Actuarial consultancy practice of KPMG Australia which he joined in November 2014. Prior to this held various life actuarial roles in other Big 4 consultancies and a global investment bank in the UK and Australia.

Giri is an experienced actuary who has worked in the superannuation and life insurance industries. He has deep knowledge of the Australian and UK markets. Giri is currently a member of the Insurance Risk Team at APRA.

Greg has been leading working group B for the taskforce. Greg is currently the Chief Actuary and Chief Investment Officer for Resolution Life Australasia, and prior to this was AMP Group Chief Actuary.

 Hadyn Bernau Hadyn Bernau

Hadyn is a Principal of Finity in the Melbourne office and has 19 years of actuarial experience across corporate, government, regulatory and not-for-profit settings. He has particular expertise in private health insurance – in pricing, product and capital management. He is also pioneering the use of relational analytics in Australia to measure and build organisations’ relational capital.

Hamza Hanbali  Hamza Hanbali

Hamza Hanbali is a Lecturer in Actuarial Science at Monash University. He received a Ph.D. degree from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2019, after which he stayed as a research fellow in the Actuarial Research Group. Since 2015, he is a member of the Institute of Actuaries in Belgium. He worked as an actuary in the risk management department of AXA Belgium, and has been involved as a consultant in the construction of the medical index for the private health insurance sector.

Hazel is a Professor in the School of Risk & Actuarial Studies at UNSW Sydney and Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research. Her current research investigates pension and superannuation choices in accumulation and decumulation and the role of choice architecture, information, financial advice and financial literacy. She also works on the design and demand of retirement products including annuities, long term care insurance and reverse mortgages. Hazel works closely with the financial services industry, superannuation and pension funds and policy makers in Australia and internationally and has consulted to a range of Australian and international organisations including the World Bank, the OECD and government in China and South Korea. She is a member of the UniSuper Consultative Committee, the Scientific Committee of Netspar, the Advisory Board of the Mercer CFA Global Pension Index, the China Ageing Finance Forum and the Board of the Conexus Institute. In 2019 she was appointed inaugural Director of the International Pension Research Association (IPRA).

Hean Peng Thniah (HP) has held various roles in Pacific Life Re since the office was established in Australia, including Director of Actuarial Projects, Director of Risk Management and most recently, Head of Risk and CRO for Australia. He has a wealth of experience in the insurance and banking sectors, particularly in managing commercial negotiations. HP is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute of Australia.

Hoa is a leading life insurance actuary with 35 years’ experience in insurance, superannuation and banking, including 15 years as Partner in charge of KPMG Actuarial & Financial Risk team. Her career highlights include advising a foreign government to establish its risk based capital framework for insurance, acting as Appointed Actuary for 3 different life insurers and leading the Australian retail risk data collection and analysis from 2008-2019.  

Hoa is a regular speaker at industry forums and is the 2020 President of the Actuaries Institute.

Huda  Huda Ansari

Huda is a qualified actuary with over nine years’ actuarial experience in the financial services industry, primarily within Australia, UK, and Pakistan. She has worked across wide range of actuarial projects covering life insurance reviews, transaction strategy support, and year-end audits; CTP insurance scheme privatisation; and workers’ compensation exposure measurement and premium pricing.

More recently, she has been focusing on developing strategic solutions to prevent events from resulting in remediation in the superannuation space.

Hugh Miller Hugh Miller

Hugh Miller is a left-handed  principal at Taylor Fry, where he has worked for more than decade. Many of his recent projects have been for government, modelling welfare, housing and disability programs. This includes work on wellbeing frameworks in New Zealand. He also has a keen interest in research, including actuarial assumption setting and in applying newer statistical techniques to traditional problems. He has a PhD in statistics, chairs the Institute’s Interest Rate Working Group is also part of Institute’s Public Policy Council Committee, and is an editor at Actuaries Digital.

Ian Fryer BW Ian Fryer

Ian has been involved in the superannuation industry for about 25 years. He is an actuary and has been Head of Research at Chant West for the last 15 years. He is responsible for coordinating the research program for super and pension funds, including analysis of the performance, portfolio structure and governance of their investment offerings. The assessment of each fund’s investment capabilities involves review of investment documentation and regular meetings with key investment professionals. Ian also has a strong focus on fees and insurance disclosure and leads an industry-wide group that is helping the industry implement ASIC’s new fee disclosure regime.

Ian has had a long career in financial services senior management and board roles, in Australia, the UK, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Until recently, he chaired the boards of OnePath Life, OnePath General Insurance and ANZ Lenders Mortgage Insurance.  Until mid 2015, he was Deputy Chairman of APRA, the prudential regulator of banks, insurance companies and superannuation funds.   He is now a Principal at PFS Consulting.

He has a deep interest in risk management and risk culture. In recent years, he has had a particular interest in the impact of social attitudes and norms on risks for financial services businesses. 

Ian Pollard  Ian Pollard

Ian is an actuary whose 40+ year professional career has spanned corporate finance and advice, strategic investment in businesses and roles as Chairman, CEO or director of more than 30 companies in many industries. Ian is currently a principal of PFS CONSULTING, Chairman of RGA Australia and a director of Milton Corporation and of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists. Ian is also an author and speaker. His first books were about corporate finance and value creation for shareholders. Then, about 20 years ago, Ian’s principal professional interest moved from financial matters to the study of how human and social capital is developed. Throughout those 20 years Ian has been coaching senior executives through Foresight’s Global Coaching and has written two books on personal growth - Investing in Your Life (2009) and Mental Spinach (2017 - jointly with his daughter Jess).

Jenna is the Head of Reserving at Allianz Australia. With 13 years of general insurance experience across a variety of roles including valuations, capital and investments management, Jenna is passionate about demystifying the complexities of the Finance Actuarial domain. For 18 months Jenna also led the IFRS17 implementation project at a major insurer, as well as contributing to the industry interpretation of IFRS17 through her membership of the IFRS17 AASB TRG.

Jess is an educator, career coach and the coauthor of Mental Spinach. She is also the Business Director of CareerSwitch, a new career transition and outplacement organisation which has been created in response to the changing world of work. Her recent work has focused around better understanding the career aspirations of young people through managing community-wide data projects that explore how the support ecosystem in both rural and urban Australia can be tailored to better engage with the career transition needs of individuals. She is a professional member of the Career Development Association of Australia and holds a Master of Education in Career Development from the Queensland University of Technology. Johan is a Senior Projects Actuary for Swiss Re's ANZ Life & Health Pricing team. He joined Swiss Re in Zurich in 2011, where he was the Senior Pricing Actuary responsible for the Dutch market, and moved to Sydney in February 2018.  His other experiences include team leadership and a secondment to the Canadian office.

Johan is a qualified actuary with the Swiss Actuarial Association. He started his career in the Netherlands, where he's originally from, working in employee benefits consulting and asset liability management. He's enjoys the variety of work and he is passionate about helping Swiss Re's clients close the protection gap by bringing ideas from his varied background to Australia & New Zealand.

John De Ravin

John is a retired actuary who spent most of his actuarial career in the Government Actuary’s Office and as an Appointed Actuary to the Australian operations of two of the world’s leading reinsurers.  He holds Bachelor degrees in Science and Economics (from ANU), an MBA from Macquarie University and a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning from Finsia.  He is a Fellow of Finsia and a CPA. 

His interests are in financial planning and investment.  He is a member of the Institute’s Retirement Incomes Working Group. He has held many roles within the Actuaries Institute and was on Council from 1999 to 2001. 

He has written about twenty papers on a variety of actuarial topics, and also, since his retirement, a book about personal financial strategies, Slow and Steady: 100 wealth-building strategies for all ages.

Katja Hanewald BW Katja Hanewald

Katja Hanewald is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies. She is also an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR), where she is developing the research program of CEPAR's Australia-China Population Ageing Research Hub. Her research addresses risk management and insurance aspects of population ageing with a focus on China.

Her current research investigates optimal retirement financial decisions of older households in China and the design of retirement financial products such as reverse mortgages, long-term care insurance, and annuities. Katja held academic positions at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany (2008-2010), and at the University of New South Wales (2011-2013), and worked at the German Federal Ministry of Finance (2013-2015). She obtained her doctoral degree in Economics from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in November 2010.

Kenneth is a Senior Manager in EY’s General Insurance Actuarial practice, based in Sydney.  He has experience in assisting insurers in meeting the challenges of IFRS 17 implementations, having worked with a range of general insurers in Australia, from large multinationals to small monoline insurers. In particular, he has an interest in the interpretation of financial statements from an investment analyst perspective.  Kenneth is the Functional Lead of a global EY group that is developing platforms and solutions specifically aimed at meeting the IFRS 17 needs of the small to middle tier general insurers. Prior to joining EY, he had corporate, portfolio management and data analytics consulting experience.

Leanne is a consultant in the General Insurance practice at EY with 1.5 years of IFRS 17 experience. She has worked on a number of projects both assisting insurers with IFRS 17 implementation and assessing their IFRS 17 readiness. As a result, she has gained insight into the particular implications of the new accounting standard on general insurers. She is particularly interested in how the new accounting standard will impact the way insurers communicate their financial results and performance.

Lesley is currently Vice-Chair of the CPD committee, and formerly Convenor of the Actuaries Institute’s Diversity and Inclusion Working Group. She has had an extensive international career in recruitment and human resources in the specialist markets of actuarial and data analytics.  Lesley also consults to clients on talent development initiatives, workforce planning, and diversity and inclusion strategies.  Lesley has written a number of papers and articles on the development of the actuarial profession.

Lesley holds a degree in Business Studies, post-graduate qualifications in Human Resources and a Masters degree in Asian Studies from UNSW.  She is currently writing a dissertation on diversity in the Actuarial profession to complete her Masters of Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney.

Linda is a healthcare actuary working as lead consultant for Quantium Health, a joint venture between Quantium and Discovery Health. She is passionate about using rich healthcare data to improve wellness and healthcare outcomes. In her work at Quantium, she focuses on helping healthcare, insurance and government clients use their own and other publicly available data sources to make the best decisions. Linda joined Quantium Health from Discovery Health in South Africa, where she led teams working in healthcare analysis, risk management, pricing and strategy.

She has more than 25 years of experience working in financial services in a range of actuarial, risk management and finance roles in Australia, Asia and Europe. She has a keen interest in enterprise risk management including the effective management of non-financial risks and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders to deliver improved customer outcomes in financial services

Luke Liu joined CommInsure pricing team in 2010 and is currently the Executive Pricing Manager of CommInsure/AIA and responsible for the CommInsure Retail Advised portfolio. Prior to working in CommInsure/AIA, Luke spent 3 years in MLC Finance/Valuation team as part of the NAB graduate program, and also 1 year at Macquarie University as a senior research and teaching assistant.

Luke's qualifications include a Bachelor of Actuarial Studies from Macquarie University and he has also been a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia since late 2009.

He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and the UK Institute of Actuaries. Marc has a keen interest in the future of the actuarial profession (and ensuring actuaries remain relevant) and the insurance industry, and is a regular presenter on these topics, as well as being a co-author on the Actuaries Institute Green Paper on the Impact of Big Data on the Future of Insurance.

Marcello Negro  Marcello Negro

Marcello is qualified Actuary and Principal at Finity Consulting who has worked in the general insurance industry since 2012. Marcello was previously based in Finity’s Melbourne office, but is now based out of the Sydney office servicing a wide range of clients in both cities.


He has been involved in a range of traditional and non-traditional actuarial projects, with extensive experience in personal lines pricing, consulting to many major insurance companies across Australia  More recently Marcello has focused on applying modern analytics and machine learning techniques in these projects, and thinking about the impacts that these tools with have on the industry more broadly.
Marlon Chan BW Marlon Chan FIAA

Marlon is a Portfolio Manager in the Equity Income team and has been with First Sentier Investors since 2007. Marlon is responsible for the management of the Equity Income Fund, an Australian equities strategy focused on high income and low volatility outcomes, and the listed equities and capital notes investments within the Target Return Income Fund.

In addition to his portfolio management responsibilities, Marlon is a specialist in equity portfolio risk analysis and derivative pricing and has lead responsibility for fundamental stock research for the equity income team. Marlon has also held a number of investment roles within First Sentier Investors.

Marlon has completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Actuarial Studies) from the University of New South Wales, with majors in Finance and Actuarial Studies. He was awarded the UNSW Co-op Program Scholarship in Actuarial Studies and has also completed all three levels of the CFA exam. Marlon also lectures the Investment Management and Finance specialist stream for the Actuarial qualification program.

Martin Mulcare BW Martin Mulcare

Martin Mulcare is an FIAA who is currently enjoying a portfolio of activities where the common theme is that he loves sharing ideas. In Martin’s prior corporate career path, he had more than 25 years’ experience in actuarial and executive roles in the financial services industry.

In his executive roles he took a keen interest in understanding his customers, primarily in life insurance. In subsequent roles, he has conducted workshops on customer service in diverse industries. As a business adviser and company director he often plays “the voice of the customer”.

Martin was, until recently, the facilitator for the Professionalism Course for the Actuaries Institute.

Matthew Ayoub Mathew Ayoub

Mathew is a Director at Deloitte, qualified actuary (FIAA), Certified Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) and member of the Actuaries Institute General Insurance Practice Committee (GIPC). She has over ten years’ experience in SMSFs and retirement heading up SMSF specialist Accurium’s technical services capabilities and managing the development and maintenance of Challenger’s retirement adviser tools. Melanie is well renown in the SMSF sector as one of the leading female presenters and specialises in tax compliance, retirement modelling, and pensions strategies. She is a member of the SMSF Association regulatory committee and Actuaries Institute Retirement Incomes Working Group and wealth distribution working group. Melanie is passionate about actuaries having a voice in improving the quality of financial advice in retirement through product development, adviser education, and risk based advice tools.

Michael Rice  Michael Rice

Michael specialises in providing strategic advice to financial institutions, fund managers, government agencies, industry associations and large superannuation funds. Michael is the Chief Executive Officer of Rice Warner, which he founded in December 1987.

Michael heads up Rice Warner’s public policy work. He has undertaken pioneering research into Age Pension dependency and trends.  He has a keen interest in the integration of social security and superannuation, as well as measuring the adequacy of retirement incomes.

  • Michael is a member of the Advisory Board of the ANU College of Business and Economics.
  • Chairman of QSuper’s Investment Committee from January 2009 to June 2013 and remained an independent investment expert on the Committee until March 2016.

Michael Sherris BW Michael Sherris

Michael Sherris is Professor of Actuarial Studies, at UNSW Sydney, where he was appointed in 1998 to establish the Actuarial Studies program. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and the Society of Actuaries (North America).

Michael has been an active member of the Australian actuarial profession having previously served on the Council of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. He is Co-Editor of the North American Actuarial Journal, on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Actuarial Science and a Co-editor of the Springer Actuarial Series. He was President (2008-2009) of the Asia Pacific Risk and Insurance Association and is past Chair of the AFIR-ERM Section of the International Actuarial Association.  He is Chief Investigator and Director of Industry Engagement for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research. His research focuses on longevity risk and long term care modelling and longevity risk management.

Michelle is an R&D actuary working in life insurance at Pacific Life Re. Her research to date has been focussed on the retail life insurance space, particularly on morbidity and mortality risks. Having previously worked in pricing, valuation and capital roles, Michelle is passionate about understanding the broader impacts of Climate Change and is a member of the Institute’s Climate Change Working Group and the COVID-19 Working Group.

Mike Ashely BW Mike Ashley

Mike is the Chief Risk Scientist of the Dynamic Risk Assessment Global Centre of Excellence and in charge of research and development activities in addition to bespoke client delivery work. Mike joined KPMG Advisory in June 2013, as a subject matter expert in quantitative financial modelling of both derivatives and capital. Experienced in the modelling of derivatives across credit, FX, IR and Equities and Energy, Mike also developed risk appetite, stress testing, regulatory/economic Basel II capital models and methodologies to financial institutions. Mike provided post-modelling support interactions with the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority.

Prior to joining KPMG, Mike worked for Macquarie Group providing model validation for exotic derivative and capital models. In parallel Mike developed Basel II Advanced Model Approach compliant production model systems for Operational Risk and Advanced Internal Ratings Based approach models for Credit capital. This led to extensive experience with low data/high impact modelling and expert elicitation methods. Prior to joining finance, Mike held post-doctoral positions in USA and Australia wining research grants to analysing tera-byte-scale datasets for the detection of gravitational waves in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration which recently was awarded Nobel Prizes for its threeprincipal investigators.

Mike has 30 years' actuarial experience across the world and moved into actuarial education in 2014. Following the successful development and delivery of the Part II program at Monash, Mike joined the Actuaries Institute in 2018 to lead the new Actuary and Fellowship programs. He is currently responsible for building and managing a team to design, develop and teach the post-university actuarial subjects.

Mike Thornton  Mike Thornton

As Chief Risk Officer, Mike is responsible for risk and compliance capabilities, and has 30 years’ experience in life insurance and wealth management, largely in the UK, Asia and Australasia.

He has held a wide range of executive roles, including Group Chief Actuary and Chief Risk Officer roles. Prior to joining AIA in February 2016, Mike was the Group Chief Risk Officer at AMP, and prior to that, had a long career with the AXA Group.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in Australia and the UK, and is a Certified Experienced Risk Actuary. 

Michael Williamson  Mike Williamson

Mike is Head of Actuarial Reporting at Pacific Life Re, Australia. He has over 10 years of reinsurance experience in valuation, actuarial modelling and R&D across Canada, the UK, Asia and Australia. Mike is heavily involved in the implementation of IFRS 17 and USGAAP Long Duration Targeted Improvements at Pacific Life Re, and is a member of the Actuaries Institute AASB 17 Reinsurance Technical Subgroup. Mike is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst.

Morten Tiedemann  Morten Tiedemann

Morten is working in Hannover Re's longevity team as an actuarial specialist in longevity solutions. He has a background in Mathematics and Economics, holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics and is a qualified actuary.

Morten joined Hannover Re in 2015 and in his current role in the longevity team he is dedicated to product development, marketing, modelling and actuarial aspects of longevity solutions with worldwide scope and Australia and New Zealand in particular.

Nathan Bonarius BW Nathan Bonarius

Nathan is a Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers with 10 years’ experience specialising in superannuation and group life insurance. Nathan is actively involved in assisting superannuation industry clients with strategic advice, mergers, administration and outsourcing arrangements, financial advice and policy work. Nathan is a qualified Actuary (FIAA) and holds an MBA from Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Nathan is actively involved in public policy work and sits on the Actuaries Institute’s Public Policy Council Committee. Nathan also undertook a six-month secondment to Department of Treasury, Canberra in 2018.

Nghiep is the AIA General Manager of Data Analytics and Optimisation and has over 20 years of experience in a broad range of roles in the life insurance and energy industries. In life insurance, Nghiep’s experience has mainly focussed on data analytics, pricing and capital. He is responsible to take forward the data strategy at AIA and to drive better data driven outcomes for customers and AIA. He is a fellow of the Actuaries Institute of Australia.

Nick Callil  Nick Callil

Nick Callil is Head of Retirement Solutions for Willis Towers Watson Australia. He leads the firm’s research in the area of retirement strategy, and consults to Australia’s leading superannuation funds, financial institutions and government bodies on superannuation and retirement, advising on retirement and accumulation phase design, default investment option strategy, longevity risk solutions, safe spending rates in retirement, lifecycle design and digital provision of retirement income projections.  He has authored papers spanning topics including retirement strategy for Trustees, bucket strategies in retirement, dynamic lifecycle strategies and evaluation metrics for retirement products. 

Nick is an actuary, an Adjunct Fellow at the Macquarie Applied Finance Centre and a member of ASFA’s Super System Design Policy Council. He is a regular speaker and presenter at industry and professional conferences in Australia and internationally.

Nicole is a qualified Actuary with more than 10 years’ experience across Reinsurance, Financial Services and Consultancy businesses. She is passionate about life insurance and is an avid believer in the positive difference we make for our customers at their time of need. She has a strong background across pricing, product, business development and strategy and is the Head of Marketing and Client Solutions at SCOR Global Life Australia. She has been with SCOR since 2014.

Nicolette Rubinsztein BW Nicolette Rubinsztein

Nicolette is a non-executive director at a number of leading companies in the finance industry - UniSuper, Zurich/ OnePath Insurance, Class Limited, CBHS Health Fund and SuperEd. She was also President of the Actuaries Institute in 2019, is author of “Not Guilty” and is Chair of Missionvale Australia. Prior to becoming a company director, she held senior roles at CBA/ Colonial First State, BT and Towers Perrin. She was a director of ASFA for eight years and chair of its Super System Design Council. Nicolette is a qualified actuary, holds an executive MBA from the AGSM and is a graduate of AICD.

Niki is a Principal in Deloitte and has provided 20 years of consulting and advisory advice to general insurers and injury schemes.  Prior to Deloitte she co-lead the boutique consulting business Actuarial Edge, and has corporate and consulting experience having worked at WorkSafe and PwC. She has a depth of experience in strategy work, project evaluation and implementation, reserving and pricing.  Recently she has worked with clients across a number of various industry sectors including community clubs, education sector and government social policy. Niki is an active member of the profession having served on working groups and assisted with the development of GI course components.

Nikita is a Senior Actuarial Analyst at Challenger, specialising in product development and pricing of retirement income products. Previously Nikita worked for nearly 5 years at Willis Towers Watson in Retirement Consulting team with a large focus on the financial management of defined benefit schemes. She has been involved in a wide range of projects consulting on defined benefit de-risking solutions such as DB to DC conversions, de-risking investment strategies and purchase of annuities.  Nikita is an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries Australia and is passionate about the evolving retirement industry and the development of innovative retirement income products.

Oscar Chen BW Oscar Chen

Oscar is a Senior Product Actuary from Challenger and a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. He has almost ten years of experience in financial services and particularly life insurance industry, specialised in product development and pricing for risk business and retirement income products. He is currently the Chair of the Actuaries Institute Wealth Distribution Working Group and a member of the Retirement Incomes Working Group. Based in Sydney, Paul heads up Willis Towers Watson’s Australian and New Zealand Insurance Consulting and Technology business.

Paul has worked in a range of senior roles in the insurance sector in both Australia and Asia. His career of over 30 years spans a broad range of roles and experience and includes Executive Directorships, Chief Executive, Chief Risk Officer, Chief Actuary and Chief Financial Officer as well as establishing a life company in Asia.

Paul is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and has a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University.

Peter Mulquiney 

Peter Mulquiney

Peter is a Principal of Taylor Fry. His role centres on analytics, drawing on more than 15 years’ experience in actuarial consulting. He provides advice to business clients, the social sector and injury schemes. Among his projects, Peter has worked with the NSW Government to develop a model that predicts the life pathways of each child and young person in NSW. This work is being used to develop new programs that aim to improve outcomes for society’s most vulnerable.

Previously he served as the Chief Executive Officer of FBAlliance Insurance, Chief Operating Officer of Aon Benfield Analytics Asia Pacific, and Vice President Operations, Public Affairs, and Reinsurance for the Florida Farm Bureau Insurance Companies.

Rade serves as Vice-Chair of the International Actuarial Association’s Resource and Environmental Working Group and was Vice President – Casualty for the American Academy of Actuaries from 2016 – 2018. He has a long history of volunteer service, including roles with the Actuaries Institute of Australia, American Academy of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, and International Actuarial Association. He is a past Chair of the Board of the Florida Insurance Council and of the Advisory Council of the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund.

His main areas of interest include how changing population demographics affect catastrophe exposure, climate change adaptation, applications of catastrophe models for disaster planning in developing countries, building code development, and community resilience. Rade has maintained close ties with academic institutions, including being a lecturer for undergraduate classes in actuarial science, risk management, and political science.

 Ramona Meyrick Dr Ramona Meyricke

Dr Ramona Meyricke is a Director at Taylor Fry where she works in a team to measure, model and identify opportunities for better government policy and programs, and health and disability systems and services. She has over twelve years’ experience working as an actuary across the superannuation, life insurance, health and government sectors. Her work and research focuses on challenges linked to population ageing, health, morbidity and mortality risks, and management of these risks by individuals, companies and governments. She is an active member of the Institute’s Climate Change Working Group.

Ray has worked for both life insurance companies and consultancies in Australia, South-East Asia, the United Kingdom and South Africa. He returned to Australia in 2016 and currently works at Deloitte in its Actuaries and Consultants team which covers a diverse range of issues including risk, capital and transactional work.

Rein van Rooyen is the Head of Investment Performance & Operations at QSuper, having accountability for Investment Performance, Investment Data, Unit Pricing, Investment Implementation and Capital Market Operations.

Prior to this role, Rein played a leading role in the development of QSuper’s ALM capability.  Rein holds a number of board and committee positions, including being the Australian representative on the IAA Education Committee, Education Council Committee for the Actuaries Institute, CFA Society Sydney Director, Investment & Wealth Institute’s APAC Advisory Council and is also the Superannuation and Investments Editor for Actuaries Digital.  Before relocating to Australia at the start of 2017, Rein was a Principal Consultant and Group Leader in the Actuarial Practice at PwC UK where he led teams to deliver solutions for its clients across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Richard Dunn - Richard Dunn

Richard joined Rice Warner in June 2015 while putting the final touches on a thesis in Quantitative Risk.  Now graduated, Richard applies his experience to the wealth management sector to:

  • Produce a range of Rice Warner’s Public Policy submissions, particularly regarding the development of retirement products and assessing the long-term sustainability of the superannuation sector.
  • Review and provide guidance on the behaviour of investment strategies.
  • Provide strategic advice to superannuation funds regarding their market position, potential member retention strategies, mergers and acquisitions.
  • Leverage data analytics to improve member outcomes through Rice Warner’s Super Insights research.

In addition to a combined Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science (Adv. Math) degree from the University of New South Wales Richard has qualified for fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries Australia (FIAA). During this study Richard specialised in Investment Management and Finance and was subsequently awarded two Andrew Prescott Prizes for the highest performance in each examined course. 

In his spare time Richard researches artificial intelligence, spends hours in the kitchen and is currently training for his first Ironman triathlon.

Richard Lyon has almost 40 years’ experience in the financial services sector, particularly in relation to life insurance and retail funds management.

Richard is now Head of Actuarial (Transformation and IFRS) at TAL, where he has worked for the past three years.  This is a challenging role: encouraging innovation and collaboration across actuarial valuation teams and decoding and explaining the hidden meaning in the IFRS 17 accounting standard.

Richard has served on the Council of the Institute and on several committees, including the taskforce that produced the new Code of Conduct. He has had an active role in the education of future actuaries, as a tutor and exam marker; through membership and chairmanship of the Education Management Committee and Council Education Committee; in championing the introduction of the Part II (“Actuarial Control Cycle”) course; and as a co-editor and co-author of the Part II textbook.

Richard is currently a member of the Institute’s AASB 17 Taskforce, also serving on two technical groups established to support the development of APRA’s thinking in key areas of the application of the standard.

Rob Rice  Rob Rice

Rob has over 14 years of experience in banking, wealth management, life insurance and reinsurance. Rob is a member of the Aon Reinsurance Solutions team where he focuses on life reinsurance structures which provide unique solutions to clients challenges or enable their growth opportunities. Prior to joining Aon Rob held an executive position in Life Insurance & Innovation in South Africa where he gained hands on experience in all areas of the life insurance value chain. Rob is a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries as well as a CFA Charterholder. 

Robbie Campo Robbie Campo

Robbie Campo is the Group Executive – Brand, Advocacy and Product at Cbus. She has worked for almost two decades in the superannuation industry including previously as Deputy Chief Executive at Industry Super Australia.

Robbie has extensive experience in product, marketing, brand, communications, strategic policy and advocacy, risk and compliance and financial advice. In her role at Industry Super Australia Robbie led significant advocacy efforts for the introduction of consumer protections in the financial advice sector including the introduction of a best interest test for advice. 

She is a current Non-Executive Director and member of the Audit and Risk Committee at Victoria Legal Aid, and is a Director of Women in Super and the Chair of WIS’ Policy Committee.

Rob Kerr Robert Kerr

Robert is a Senior Account Executive at Gen Re. Prior to joining Gen Re in Australia 5 years ago Robert worked for Gen Re in the UK for 5 years and prior to this led pricing and reinsurance for protection, at Scottish Provident and annuity business at Aviva.

Rudi Minbatiwala BW Rudi Minbatiwala

Rudi is Head of Equity Income at First Sentier Investors. Rudi established the Equity Income capability in 2004 and has built a strong track record in the management of objectives-based investment strategies. Rudi has more than 20 years’ investment experience. He is co-Portfolio Manager for the Equity Income Fund and the Target Return Income Fund and is responsible for investment strategy, stock selection, portfolio construction and investment process enhancement for the Equity Income strategies.

Rudi joined First Sentier Investors in 2000 and his previous roles included Senior Portfolio Manager - Australian Equities, Equity Analyst covering small companies and the diversified financials sector, and Senior Quantitative Analyst. Rudi has completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Actuarial Studies) and a Bachelor of Applied Finance from Macquarie University. Rudi earned the CFA charter in 2003 and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ryan Boyd  Ryan Boyd

Ryan Boyd is the Regional Head of Corporate Actuarial - APac, qualified Associate Actuary at Allianz Partners. He has almost 9 years of actuarial experience with much of it spent with Deloitte in South Africa before moving to Brisbane in his current role. Ryan is a former Regional Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Deloitte South Africa and United Nations Ambassador as well as a former TEDx speaker. He is passionate about actuarial development/evolution, social responsibility and protecting the policyholder. Away from work, Ryan is happily married to his beautiful wife, heavily involved at his church and an avid Aussie cricket supporter including the Heat in the BBL.

Sally Galbraith  Sally Galbraith

Sally Galbraith is a Director in the Office of the Scheme Actuary at the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Since joining the NDIA in March 2014, she has had a major role in helping to develop and implement an outcomes framework for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Prior to joining the NDIA, Sally worked in the Health Team at PwC, and for 10 years before that was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW.

She also has extensive prior experience as an actuarial consultant in the general insurance area, at Taylor Fry and Tillinghast. Sally is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and has a PhD in biostatistics from the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre at the University of Sydney.

Sam Fortey 

Sam Fortey

Sam is the Claims Manager at Swiss Re where he is responsible for a team of claims specialists working across the large retail and group claims portfolio in Australia and New Zealand. Prior to this he was the Retail Claims Manager, responsible for the retail claims portfolio.

Sam is a qualified physiotherapist with over 5 years clinical experience treating musculoskeletal and occupational injuries. Whether it was in an elite football environment allowing players to return to the pitch or allowing an injured worker return to their place of employment he's always had a passion for restoring health and function. 

Sam made the transition into Life insurance 10 years ago focussing this passion on allowing people to realise the health benefits of work in the claims space. Initially working for direct insurers and now reinsurer he has a strong focus on the whole value chain of end to end disability management. He is currently leading Swiss Re's disability claims analytics project locally and is focussed on the specific drivers of claims experience and how insurers and reinsurers can take a more wholistic approach.

Sam has been an active member of several industry working parties including the FSC Life Insurance Code of Practice working group, FSC Mental health working group and several regulatory working groups. Sam was a member of the ALUCA Royal Commission working party and a panellist exploring the claims implications stemming from the Royal Commission.

Samantha Fuller BW Samantha Fuller

Sam joined Deloitte in mid-2019 as a Partner with a focus on improving outcomes in the insurance sector. Through the use of analytics and new technologies Sam sees tremendous opportunity to improve processes, lift capability and provide a better operating system for people working in the insurance system and more so those requiring its support.

Prior to joining Deloitte Sam spent five years deep in operations at EML. As GM Claims Optimisation she had an opportunity to work across the National third party administration business and get to know the nuts and bolts of the claims management operation. Over the 5 years EML underwent an unprecedented rate of growth and success in returning people to work. Prior to EML, Sam was a consulting actuary for 15 years predominantly in respect of personal injury insurance. Sam has advised across all aspects of the insurance cycle for all manner of clients including advice on legislative change and remuneration structures for third party providers.

Sara Fuller  Sara Fuller

Sara is currently the Head of Client Delivery for Mercer's Institutional Wealth (Pacific) business; leading the Client Delivery Team of 40+ awesome investment and retirement professionals providing consulting services to Australia’s largest superannuation funds and investors. Sara leads her team in re-imaging the way theyengage with clients, more real-time, more co-creation, more insights-led; and living the #futureofwork in the now developing new capabilities and flexible ways of working as the world continues to change. 

Sara moved into this role after serving as the People & Culture Leader for Institutional Wealth and consulting on strategic people initiatives across Mercer Pacific, and three years in Mercer’s Career business providing strategic HR / transformation consulting advice to clients across a range of industries. Prior to Mercer, Sara spent ten years in the strategic workforce transformation space in both consulting and in-house roles across Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Sarah Johnson

Sarah Johnson is the Scheme Actuary of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.  

Prior to her appointment, Sarah was a Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Sarah has worked within the disability sector, and broader health and human services sector for the last fifteen years. She assisted the Disability Investment Group in costing a NDIS in the Way Forward report, and worked with the Productivity Commission on the Disability Care and Support Inquiry. 

A Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, Sarah has also collaborated with a number of state/territory departments and undertaken actuarial work in accident compensation, housing, child protection, health and aged care. 

In 2016 Sarah was awarded Actuary of the Year by the Actuaries Institute in recognition for her significant contributions to the success of the NDIS and the introduction of actuarial techniques into new areas of social policy.  
Sen Nagarajan  Sen Nagarajan

Sen is an experienced actuary working in banking and analytics.  He has over 15 years’ experience working across insurance, wealth management and banking in Australia and the UK.  Sen has supported financial services institutions in areas such as pricing, valuations, credit risk modelling, customer analytics, economic capital modelling, stress testing and capital management.

Shweta Krishna BW Shweta Krishna

Shweta, FIAA is a senior manager within EY’s Actuarial Services practice based in Sydney, providing consulting advice to life insurers and reinsurers. She has over 12 years’ experience in the Life Insurance and Wealth Management industries and has significant technical expertise and broad coverage of the key issues typically arising in Australian life insurance business. Shweta is actively involved in supporting IFRS 17 implementation and advising on the key operational and financial implications of IFRS 17 to several large Australian insurers. She has been a member of a number of internal EY IFRS 17 working groups and Actuaries Institute working groups on IFRS 17, including the Risk Adjustment & Capital Working group.

Seth Lazar 

Seth Lazar

Professor Seth Lazar is a philosopher at the ANU. He has worked on the ethics of war, self-defence and risk, and is now the project leader for the multi-disciplinary Humanising Machine Intelligence Grand Challenge project at ANU, a $6m investment to explore the foundations and design of democratically legitimate data and AI systems.

His work has appeared with the world's leading philosophy journals and presses, and he has received awards and grants from the American Philosophical Association, the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia, the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Australian Research Council, as well as (jointly) the ANU Vice-Chancellor's award for excellence in research, 2019.

Shane Burdack 

Shane Burdack

Shane's career spans 25+ years including Chief Underwriter & Claims Manager positions and with these, seats on respective company senior management teams. He has served as a member of the IFSA (now FSC) Risk Management Board and the National ALUCA Executive Board. Shane represented the Industry as a member of the Australian Government appointed Human Genetics Advisory Committee (HGAC) for the triennium 2009 - 2012. He has been published in national and international industry journals, presented and chaired sessions at the 2015 and 2017 FSC Annual Life Insurance Conferences, the 2019 Institute of Actuaries Summit and has delivered presentations at ALUCA bi-annual and mini conferences, retail insurer national risk conferences and key broker / distribution seminars.

Shane is a Fellow - ALUCA, Senior Associate - ANZIIF, Associate of the Academy of Life Underwriting in the U.S. (with distinction) and holds a Diploma of Health Counselling.

Simon Lim  Simon Lim

Simon is a Director at SLC Actuarial and has more than twelve years of experience as a consulting actuary specialising in general and health insurance. He was formerly a Senior Manager and Appointed Actuary at Ernst & Young Actuarial Services where he advised Boards and executives on strategy, analytics and actuarial compliance. As the Australia lead for Cytora, an EQT backed InsureTech that recently raised US$33m, Simon led the development of AI powered insurance pricing models for insurers. His other experience includes management consulting at Partners in Performance and being an entrepreneur.

 Simone Collins Simone Collins

Simone Collins is the Appointed Actuary for Youi Insurance. She leads a team responsible for the company’s reserving, reinsurance and capital management. Prior to this, Simone’s roles at Youi included pricing, product development and data analytics. Before joining Youi in 2012, Simone was at APRA in the Actuarial Review team.

Simone is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and is currently studying a Digital Futures MBA at QUT.

Stephen is an independent consultant and advisor working with institutions big and small that are committed to improving the retirement outcomes of Australians. His clients range from established entities, including some of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, through to emerging businesses bringing new solutions to the industry.

Stephen has nearly 30 years’ experience in Superannuation, Wealth Management and Life Insurance. He has worked in a variety of consulting and corporate roles across the industry.

Stephen is active on social media, a frequent contributor to publications, and a regular speaker and facilitator at industry events. 

Sue Freeman BW Sue Freeman

Sue is a Senior Consultant at Finity Consultants who leads our research on mental health conditions.  She has an Honours degree in Psychology, post graduate qualifications in rehabilitation and law, and over 25 years’ experience working in personal injury policy and practice. 

Sue’s work has included a number of strategic reviews of claims and underwriting operations. She has conducted in depth reviews of the nature and causes of workers compensation claims for psychological injury;  advised on preventative and case management strategies for mental health claims; and on underwriting for mental illness in general insurance, including approaches to evidence-based risk assessment.

Sue was co-author of the Green Paper on Mental Health and Insurance published by the Actuaries Institute in 2017, and has a particular interest in improving the assessment and management of mental health claims.

Susan Looi is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute and has over 25 years of local and international financial services experience, spanning insurance, superannuation and banking.  

Susan is the Group executive leading ANZ Banking Group’s enterprise risk management, heading teams responsible for managing the Group’s risk management strategy and appetite, ICAAP/stress testing, provisioning forecasting, and credit portfolio analytics for ANZ’s wholesale banking businesses. 

Prior to ANZ Susan held senior reinsurance and insurance roles including several years in Switzerland as the Group Chief Pricing Actuary for global insurer Zurich Financial Services, focusing on life insurance and funds management. 

Susan is a director on Boards and is a member of the Risk Management Association of Australia, as well as convenor of the Actuaries Institute’s Risk Management Practice Committee.

Susie Amos BW Susie Amos

Susie is a Principal of Finity and co-chairs the Institute’s Cyber Insurance Working Group. She has a particular interest in the underwriting and pricing of cyber insurance and forward to different specialists joining forces to tackle opportunities and challenges in the digital world.

Taleb Hassan is an Analyst at Willis Towers Watson, based in Australia. He is currently studying towards his Fellowship specialising as a superannuation actuary.

Taleb has experience working with a broad range of clientele in the superannuation industry, including some of Australia’s largest defined benefit and accumulation funds.

Tiberio Caetano

Dr Tiberio Caetano is the Chief Scientist of Gradient Institute and Adjunct Professor at UNSW. He has been working in AI for 20 years as a practitioner, researcher, and entrepreneur. He held research positions in Brazil, Canada, France and Australia, including adjunct academic appointments at the ANU, University of Sydney, and UNSW. He has published at the top academic venues in machine learning, graduated numerous PhD students and led the machine learning research group at NICTA (now Data61). He led the design of decision-making algorithms that have touched millions of consumers across several industries. He co-founded Ambiata, a machine learning company later acquired by IAG, Australia’s largest general insurer. Recently he helped establish Gradient Institute, an independent, not-for-profit research institute dedicated to the research, development and dissemination of ethical AI systems.

 Tim Baynes Tim Baynes

Tim Baynes is a Senior Scientist at CSIRO where he leads research on scenarios of population growth, resource use, and environmental impacts from regional to international scales. He was the Cities and Infrastructure Lead in CSIRO’s Australian National Outlook 2019 project and he also recently co-authored the UN report on The Weight of Cities: Resource Requirements of Future Urbanization. Previous work on climate impacts and adaptation was widely cited in the Australasian chapters of the IPCC 5th Assessment. He has advised UN Environment on resource efficiency in the Asia-Pacific region and is the current Secretary of the International Society for Industrial Ecology.

Tim has over 25 years of financial services experience across both banking and wealth management and currently consults independently as a senior financial services and ERM actuary.  Tim also teaches Enterprise Risk Management at the Australian National University in Canberra and for the Actuaries Institute of Australia.  Tim is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary.

Tin Long Ho

Tin Long Ho is an Associate of Institute of Actuaries of Australia and a Scientia PhD candidate from the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies of UNSW. His research focuses on the optimal retirement financial decisions of older households and the design of retirement financial products including long-term care insurance and reverse mortgages. He also works at Deloitte, focus on credit risk modelling. Before starting his PhD, he worked in a pricing team of a life insurance company in Hong Kong. He completed his Bachelor (Honours) Degree from the University of Melbourne.

Victoria Tidmas  Vicky Tidmas

Vicky is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute with 15 years of global financial services experience and is a member of the Actuaries Institute AASB17 Task Force.

Vicky joined Suncorp in 2013 and for the past two years has been the actuarial lead of Suncorp’s general insurance IFRS17 programme, combining her deep technical expertise with her passion and practical experience in actuarial and finance transformation.

Victoria is a director in Willis Towers Watson’s Australian Insurance Consulting and Technology business. She has worked in the life insurance industry in Mainland China, Hong Kong and United Kingdom prior to returning to Australia.  Victoria’s areas of expertise include Life Insurance valuations and financial reporting.

Victoria is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.

  Vivian Dang

Vivian is an Actuary with over 10 years’ experience in superannuation consulting.  He is currently working as a Senior Consultant at MLC Wealth, and previously worked as a Consulting Actuary at The Heron Partnership and Russell Investments, providing actuarial and strategic advice to a wide range of superannuation funds and employers.  Vivian is a member of the Superannuation Practice Committee, the Life Insurance and Retirement Education Faculty and helped educate a generation of Part 3 superannuation students through course leader roles across the 6A, 6B and CAP subjects.

Vivian Yu has over 10 years professional experience as an actuary whose career has spanned areas ranging from technical and operational roles in valuation and wealth management through to product development in both the investment and life insurance sectors. She is passionate about creating better financial outcomes for all Australians who are in retirement or approaching retirement.

Yan Sun BW Yan Sun 

Yan is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries Australia and Singapore Actuarial Society, with 15 years’ experience in financial services across life insurance, superannuation and investments. Yan joined AXA France Vie in 2016 in Singapore, where she started as the business development director for Asia Pacific, part of AXA’s growing global life reinsurance operation. In 2019, Yan was also appointed as the Head of APAC excl. India, running a pricing team of actuaries as well as heading up the business.
